What is the relationship between Natural STONE, countertops AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Natural STONE, countertops AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Most formations of stone are huge batholiths (large mass of intrusive igneous rock believed to have solidified deep within the earth). Quarry locations are tiny in comparison to the size of these formations. Natural Stone Counters Destin

However, the Namibian Desert has an almost mystical landscape. There are giant dunes, vistas of rocky hills and dry riverbeds frequented by ostriches and springhok. To preserve the beauty of the desert, quarrying sites are limited to designated areas. Prior to the start of any quarrying activities, an environmental plan must be submitted and approved by the Ministry of Mines. The plan must define the procedures of quarrying that will best protect and minimize our presence in the desert. The quarries are continually monitored to ensure procedures are being followed, and to determine where and how they can be improved upon. The Africa Range is presently working to become ISO rated for its environmental standards. A strong commitment to minimizing environmental impact and working closely with the government of Namibia will ensure a continued supply of The Africa Range. Though it is definitely not a renewable resource, the high percentage of usable material removed from natural stone quarries limits the impact on our environment. Natural Stone Counters Jacksonville

Unike most quarried or mined materials being removed from our earth, natural stone has a relatively low impact on our environment. The extraction process does not require the use of any chemicals. Only water is used at quarry sites to cool and lubricate diamond abrasives to cut the stone. Natural stone quarries do not produce toxic waste piles which can pollute the surrounding environment. Natural Stone Counters Savannah

Because of the low impact that quarrying natural stone has on our environment, it has become one of many products that are used in projects that obtain LEED certification.  LEED, a voluntary program established by the U.S. Green Building Council, sets environmentally friendly construction guidelines for sustainable and energy-efficient buildings. Natural Stone Counters Savannah

All manufactured or processed materials we use in our homes adversely affect our global and local environments. The best we can do is to choose products which have the least detrimental affects on our surroundings. Natural stone is the natural choice. Granite Countertops in Alpharetta

Environmentally Friendly Beautiful Counter Tops

A counter top is a flat work surface in kitchens & food preparation areas. Commonly, cabinets are installed above and below. A counter top can be made from several different materials, such as stone, to wood, to plastic, to tiles, & even steel, among many others.

But because of the growing awareness for the environment, there are now materials for counter tops that are not only durable, but also great looking & eco friendly. So if you’re searching for a new counter top and are leaning towards materials that are a little kinder on the environment than laminate or stone, there are now plenty of options available that are made from recycled products, can be recycled at end-of-life — or are both recycled and recyclable — or are made from renewable resources.

Here are some of the greener counter top alternatives:

1. Stainless steel – On the average, Stainless steel counter tops consist of 75% recycled steel & can contain up to 100% recycled content. They emit no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), are non-porous and antibacterial. However, they do show fingerprints & scratch easily.

2. Recycled glass – There are many recycled glass counter tops on the market nowadays. Each kind has their own special charm.

3. BioGlass – This material is of 100% recyclable and recycled glass. It is available in 6 natural colors and can be used for backsplashes or counter tops.

4. Alkemi – Alkemi counter tops are made from 35% “fine flake aluminum milling scrap” a post-industrial waste products. You can choose from 3 different surface treatments (textured, classic and honed) and twelve colors.

5. Paperstone – Paperstone counter tops are created from either 100% post-consumer office paper or 100% post-consumer cardboard integrated with a non-petroleum based resin. It can be used for as kitchen & bathroom counter tops and comes in a variety of colours.

6. IceStone – This is made in Brooklyn, New York. This product has a surface twice as durable as marble, because it uses 100% glass which is otherwise bound for landfill, mixed with concrete. Like a stone product, it has to be sealed on a regular basis. You can get it in several colours. By Jessica Hendrich

A few of us went to Ray at Night in San Diego last night. It’s an art walk in the North Park neighborhood and it’s on, you guessed it, Ray Street. Actually it spills out onto some surrounding streets and about 40 studios, retail stores and cafes  are open from 7-10pm. It’s on the second Saturday of the month. Many of the studios have food and drink, some even kegs, for a few dollars. Most of the artists from the studios are hanging out and ready for conversation. It makes for a fun Saturday night, if you’re in the area. On that note, we ate at the Linkery, which is right in the neighborhood. The food is really good- they use local organic ingredients and make their own sausages, which change daily. The mexican chicken sausage was spicy goodness.

There were a few cool places and things that I came across last night. Cirello Gallery makes jewelery that is made from recycled stainless steel. They can be bought in the studio (for a small discount) or online. I tried on quite a few of the bracelets- I love the look of the jewelery, very simple designs with a cool and modern style. They are a little on the pricey side but stainless steel anything holds up pretty well over the years. A little polish here and there should do it. I’ll be back there, when I have a job.

Another really cool place we went to was Olive Branch Green Building Supply. I just started taking interior design classes, which I am loving by the way,  and this was right up my alley. All green products under one roof. I had never seen many of these materials before. One that stuck out was Nova cork flooring. They have really interesting patterns, nothing like a cork board. And it’s a sustainable, durable choice from flooring- it’s made from live trees and it does not harm them. Icestone is another sustainable product but for counter tops. It’s made from recycled glass and concrete. They have lots of color options and showrooms in different parts of the country. We plan on remodeling our kitchen soon, once again the job thing a factor, but I can’t wait to check out products like these!
